Google Introduces Hotel Finder

Google is on a roll with announcements lately, and today added the experimental Hotel Finder. The announcement says:

Finding the right hotel can make or break your vacation, so with this in mind, we’re introducing Hotel Finder, a new experimental search tool specifically designed to help you find that perfect hotel. Google Hotel Finder makes it easy to narrow down the options:

This is the type of thing travel booking sites have been dreading, as Google could easily link to or integrate Hotel Finder into search results, although it’s not surprising considering that you’ve been able to book hotels on Places Pages for some time now.

The hotels are automatically sorted by “User Rating.” These ratings appear to be drawing on reviews in Google Places, although it’s odd because they don’t all exactly match the ratings listed on Places. Clicking on any listing brings up a nice details section:

The reviews here are all from Google users off the Places Page. Pictures for every hotel I looked at were from a company called VFM Leonardo, which describes itself as a hotel marketing company. I’m a bit surprised Google’s not using photos off the Places Pages. Perhaps they don’t have enough confidence in them yet?
