Local Visibility system has a quick article on Google Places character limits. He starts out mentioning that Google has an 80 character limit on titles for Google Places Pages. But then goes on to say:
In terms of the maximum character length of your “business name,” you’ll be fine as long as you work within the rules of two sites in particular: AngiesList.com and Kudzu.com. AngiesList.com has a 50-character limit for your business name, and Kudzu.com lets you use only 40 characters.
Angieslist and Kudzu may not be the most important local sites, but they’re both places you want to be listed, so it’s a useful observation. I have to ask, however – how many companies really have names over 40 characters?
Either way, I’m sure some people have run into this as a problem. The article suggests abbreviating your name for all sites, but I’m not so sure – it’s always hard to eliminate every old listing when you previously used a different name. It might not be worth it for just these two sites. What would you do?
As an aside, this is one more consideration when naming a new business, much like whether to use a very generic business name. At least with this one, best practices for local search match what you should do anyway, ie, not use an amazingly long name.
