CityGrid Media (publisher of Citysearch, Urbanspoon, and Insiderpages, among others) is releasing a new version of its API, which will include Infogroup data.

The press release states:

Under the agreement, CityGrid will bundle Infogroup’s core business data together with its own enhanced places content and a growing list of third-party premium content, including social media details, product and service menus, deals and offers, reservation and booking widgets, videos, images and more. All of this will be paired with CityGrid’s built-in advertiser base and delivered via the new overhauled API suite.

Infogroup is a seller of business data, and has a huge database of phone-verified business info. Through this partnership, their data will be offered to developers, free, through CityGrid Media’s API. Ads will be available as well, and Greg Sterling reports that some payment associated with these will go back to Infogroup.

For businesses, the takeaway is that Infogroup’s data may be spread even wider than before. As developers use the API to populate their sites and apps, it will create business listings that could be counted as citations by the search engines. And if any of the apps become popular, people will be using the data to find businesses as well.

So you should make sure Infogroup has all the right info about your company. They’re already on my list of places to get your business listed – where you’re pointed toward their purpose-built site for updating your listing at Infogroup, ExpressUpdate. You can check your listing in just a few seconds.

Thanks to Techcrunch for reporting on CityGrid Media’s new API.
